Your Hedgehog Street e-news
Hi Rachel
It’s time to go WILD for hedgehogs! Support our new campaign by embracing the wild and helping hedgehogs thrive in your garden or greenspace. You can do this by creating wild patches; untrimmed, undisturbed sections of your garden given back to nature. These areas are hugely beneficial for hedgehogs:
- Long grass and wildflowers encourage natural creepy crawly food such as caterpillars, beetles, earthworms and earwigs.
- The long grass and leaves also provide shelter and nesting materials.
- Other species such as birds and pollinators will also make use of wildflowers and places to shelter.
Decide on your wild patch today, and over the next year we'll take you on a journey through the seasons, with tips on how to maximise the space, and what to look out for.
Here’s how to get involved:
- Choose your wild patch: It could be a corner at the back or a strip along the side of your garden.
- Let us know: Tell us about your wild patch and share some 'before' photos.
- Put your feet up: The next step is to do... nothing! Leave your wild patch undisturbed; no need to mow, strim or use any weedkillers or fertilisers. Time to put the kettle on.
- Watch this space: Over the next year, we'll be sharing seasonal tips for maximising your wild patch for hedgehogs and other wildlife. We'd love you to then share your progress one year on, to see the abundance of wildflowers, insects and (hopefully) hedgehogs!

This triple whammy of cuteness was sent in by Hedgehog Champion Jeni. After having two resident adult hogs in her garden this year, Jeni was delighted to spot this trio of hoglets out foraging at dusk. Brilliant to see!
Remember to submit your best hedgehog pics to the gallery and we’ll feature our faves here! Just remember to keep your distance and avoid using flash when snapping any prickly visitors. |

With the arrival of the school holidays, BHPS’ book selection is a great way to entertain and inspire young hedgehog fans. Wildlife Crossings is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated book tracking the journeys of seven amazing animals (including hedgehogs of course!). Follow their journeys and find out how scientists and campaigners across the world are creating ‘wildlife corridors’ for animals on the move. |
